Practical safety tips
- Meet in public the first time. Cafe, restaurant, busy bar — somewhere with people around.
- Tell a friend. Share where you’re going and who you’re meeting. Set a check-in time.
- Arrange your own transport. Don’t accept a lift from someone you’ve just met.
- Watch your drink. Don’t leave it unattended; ask the bar to look after it if you step away.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave. You don’t need a polite reason.
- Don’t share personal data early. Home address, workplace, exact university accommodation block, financial info — keep these private until you trust the person.
- Verify with a video call before meeting in person if you have any doubt about whether photos are real.
- Beware of scams. Anyone asking for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or bank details — block and report.
